PLACE FROM NO -PLACE . Main Square in Wroclaw

The part of exhibition which title was : »PLACE FROM NO-PLACE. Main Square in Wroclaw« was dedicated to the oldest municipal square in the city which changed from no-place covered by roads, tramps’ track-ways and parking places to the showcase of the city. The year 1989 was treated as a mirror, border between two different worlds. The pictures shown on the exhibition presented the same frames twenty years before and after the transformation. Pictures were associated by short historical notes with the most important historical, political and cultural facts and decisions. That brought closer history of Wroclaw’s Main Square. Viewers could compare past’s and today’s sights of pieces of Main Square and adjacent streets and also discover the changes. It was possible to notice some details like new floor, return to trade character of Świdnicka Street, the age of Pod Złotym Psem reconstructed building or commercialize of Main Square which is not covered by cars but sunshades. This short story about the history of one of the most important places in Wrocław was a pretext for consideration of changes brought by the year 1989.

Why did I join the project?
Jurek Latka: I decided to join the Project HORIZONT 1989 because I had wanted to explore the newest history and I had wanted to know how it was interpreted in other East Block’s Counbtries.
